The agriculture sector remains the backbone of the Kenyan economy, employing about 80 per
cent of the rural population and accounting for about 65 per cent of exports. Further to this food
security remains a priority agenda for any country which can only be achieved through the
agriculture sector. In line with this, the KTTI Agriculture and Environmental Studies department
is committed to producing high-quality graduates in the Agriculture and Livestock industry to
meet the growing demand for food and raw materials. The department enjoys the unique
expertise of a specialized and highly committed team of trainers who equip the trainees with
knowledge, skills and positive attitudes that will enable them venture into self-employment in
addition to becoming job creators. The department achieves its objectives through offering

The institute has a farm where the agriculture trainees carry out their practicals. It is also used for research purposes as well as a demonstration farm to the neighboring community. Practical training is further enhanced using farm visits and academic field trips to various farms as well as agricultural and livestock oriented industries and institutions. In addition trainees get a chance of gaining practical skills on climate smart agriculture such as Dragon fruit farming.
